HELP!!!! I bought an i pod clic yesterday & I'm having a nightmare trying to upload songs on it!!!?

I am quite computer literate....I have gone on the website & it doesn't help at all, I've checked all the connections several times & swapped usb ports etc..., the battery on the ipod is fully charged. When I go to load songs on to it the Media Player keeps saying its not connected when the ipod is saying that it is connected......please can anyone help!!!
