Multiple canker sores, how to help?

I have had a group of canker sores, about four all in the same area, for about two weeks now. They wont go away, and they hurt very bad. I have tried salt water rises and orajel for the pain. Any idea what would cause so many to happen at the same time? Or how to get rid of them, or at least help ease the pain?
