Should I just forget about him?

We have been dating for a year, and we just recently broke up. During our whole year together I was the only one who ever put in any effort, however it never really bothered me. He graduated in may with an engineering degree and is choosing to work as a janitor. When I tried discussing a future with him he told me I needed to slow down, he never wanted to even talk about our future's. This really bothers me. We recently broke up and now he is being nicer to me than ever and looking for a job. The other day we were talking and he was talking about how he wanted a future with me, I asked him if that's something he would be able to tell his friends and family and he said maybe. I feel that after a year together he should know by now if he would like to have a future with me. What do you think??
